Visitors inspired by Frida Kahlo’s remarkable story in the Longmont Museum’s exhibit can continue their exploration in “Women Artists: Four Centuries of Creativity,” a sweeping exhibition that celebrates four centuries of artistic innovation and achievement. The exhibition features original works on paper - etchings, engravings, lithographs, drawings, watercolor paintings, woodblock prints and photographs - by some of history’s most important women artists including Rosa Bonheur, Sonia Delaunay, Käthe Kollwitz, Louise Nevelson, Françoise Gilot and many more. Seen together, these exhibitions invite visitors to explore the many ways women artists have challenged conventions, expressed their perspectives, and transformed the history of art. Who's playing
The show draws on the Reading Public Museum in Pennsylvania, which organized it from its permanent collection. Alongside the names above are Elisabetta Sirani, Vigée-Lebrun, Clara Skinner, Peggy Bacon, Isabel Bishop and Lorna Simpson. Together they cover early professionals, nineteenth-century painters, W.P.A.-era printmakers and contemporary artists.
What to expect
The work is on paper: etchings, engravings, lithographs, drawings, watercolors, woodblock prints and photographs. Many are framed and smaller in scale, so the show rewards a slow walk and a close look. It sits in the museum's expanded galleries, which added about 70 percent more exhibit space.
Why go
Seeing the artists side by side shows how women entered the profession and pushed against its conventions over four centuries. It pairs naturally with the Frida Kahlo: An Intimate Portrait exhibition in the same building. The Longmont Museum is a short drive from Boulder, and the visit can take in both shows.
