Who's playing
Mont Alto is a five-piece chamber ensemble formed in Colorado in 1989. It has scored more than 125 silent films. Leader and pianist Rodney Sauer compiles each score from period photoplay music rather than writing new material, fitting a piece to every scene. The group plays without a conductor, with trumpet, clarinet, cello, violin and piano.
What to expect
The film runs 98 minutes. A young woman faces Death to save her fiancé. She gets her chance in three tragic romances set in Persia, Venice and a fantastical ancient China. The music is played live alongside the picture, in the museum's Stewart Auditorium. The room is cozy and seats about 250, so the musicians are close.
Why go
Silent films were made to be seen with live musicians, and this is a rare chance to see one that way in Longmont. The orchestra is based in Colorado and has a long record with the form. The film suits the Halloween theme, and the museum's Thursday series makes it an easy evening out.
