About this event
The area around Valmont Butte is a treasure trove of historic places, but most people speed by in their vehicles without realizing the amazing history all around them.It has been a place of community and displacement, resources and refuse, the sacred and the contaminated, industry and leisure. This exhibit brings to light what has occurred on and around the ancient volcanic landmark of Valmont Butte. From its stories of long-ago to today. Hidden treasures are revealed: can they be saved in order to not lose the reminders of Valmont’s colorful past? In partnership with Historic Boulder. Featured image credit: Daily Camera. Open Wednesday-Monday 9am-5pm. Closed on Tuesdays
What to expect
The exhibit covers the geology and history of Valmont Butte and the once-thriving Town of Valmont. In the 1860s that town rivaled Boulder, and today it has nearly vanished from the landscape. It also looks at the industries that shaped the area and left environmental problems that continue today. Historic structures and places that remain are shown too, with the case for preserving them. Photos come from the Carnegie Library for Local History and the museum's own collection.
Why go
Most people only know Valmont as a road they drive along. This exhibit explains what is out there and why the place carries both sacred and contaminated history. The museum is a renovated former Masonic Lodge at Broadway and Pine. It is a short visit that adds local background you can take with you the next time you pass the butte.
