The Gravity of Light brings together seven contemporary artists who use light as material and lightness as a physical experience. Through photography, video, drawing, and installation, the artists use color, shadow, and contrast to emphasize how light affects our physical experience. Light plays a profound role in our lives by constantly influencing perception and physical sensation. Familiar yet mysterious, it surprises with dramatic displays or soft subtlety, emanating from both natural and artificial sources. The physical body experiences light through a complex array of responses to color, temperature, location, time and more. This subject has been interpreted by artists for centuries as a symbolic representation of hope and a powerful metaphor for life. Who's playing
The seven artists are Sami Al Karim, Bill Armstrong, Alyson Denny, Chuck Kelton, Anne Lindberg, Elizabeth Mead and Gelah Penn. Petley, an artist herself, chose them for how differently they work with light. Their methods include analogue and digital photography, chemograms, mixed media installation, drawing and video.
What to expect
The show looks at how light shapes perception and physical sensation, through color, shadow and contrast. Some works are dramatic and some are quiet and subtle. Petley has said unexpected pairings emerge as you move through the galleries. The museum also schedules related events during the run, including an artist panel and a walkthrough led by a theater lighting designer.
