The 14th Annual Boulder Jewish Film Festival (BJFF) brings the best of world cinema to Boulder, exploring the human experience and eliciting insights into Jewish life around the world and throughout history. Held at the Dairy Arts Center, the festival fosters community connections as we engage in conversation following every screening - a unique component of the film festival world. This year’s films focus on the influential role Jews have played in shaping popular culture, the enduring strength of parental devotion, moral and physical courage, and female empowerment. Who's playing
Kathryn Bernheimer, the founding director, launched the festival under the Boulder JCC and still picks the slate. She screens 100 or more films a year and favors ones that will start a good discussion. This year's lineup includes the comedy documentary You Had to Be There, the Catskills resort portrait We Met at Grossingers, Tovah, and Once Upon My Mother. Filmmaker Abby Ginzberg joins as a guest speaker.
What to expect
Screenings take place in the Dairy's Boedecker Theater, a 70-seat arthouse cinema with a bar and popcorn at the concession stand. After each film, Bernheimer leads a talkback, sometimes with directors, actors or producers. The talk often carries on in the lobby, which the festival calls its living room. Everything is shown live and in person.
Why go
Most festivals leave the talking to the lobby. Here it is built into every screening. The Boedecker is small enough that the room feels like a shared conversation. The programming ranges from comedy and Broadway to Holocaust-era drama and Israeli life, so you can pick one film or several.
