About this event
The Byron R. White Center presents the 15th annual John Paul Stevens Lecture featuring The Honorable Carlton W. Reeves of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi. Judge Reeves’ lecture, entitled “Democracy at Sentencing,” will provide a reflection on Judge Reeves’ time as Chair of the United States Sentencing Commission and the role of that agency in making the federal criminal justice system better reflect democratic commitments to equality, inclusion, and participation. The lecture will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. with a reception to follow for in person attendees. Parking details and the zoom link will be shared the day before the event. CLE Credit is pending approval. Information for redeeming the CLE credit will be available at the event in person and will also be sent out via email to all attendees after the lecture. Please register here or at the blue link above. For questions or concerns, please email byronwhitecenter@colorado.edu.
Who's playing
Judge Reeves sits on the federal bench in Mississippi and served as Chair of the United States Sentencing Commission. He will reflect on that work and on how the agency can make the federal criminal justice system better reflect democratic commitments to equality, inclusion, and participation. The lecture series began in 2011 with Justice John Paul Stevens himself.
What to expect
The lecture runs about ninety minutes in the Wittemyer Courtroom, the largest room in the Wolf Law Building. It is a hybrid event, so some attendees join by Zoom. In-person guests are invited to a reception afterward. Colorado attorneys and judges may earn CLE credit, which is pending approval.
Why go
Sentencing is rarely discussed by someone who helped shape federal policy on it. Past Stevens lecturers have included Justice Antonin Scalia and, last year, Judge Roopali Desai on voting rights. The audience mixes law students, faculty, lawyers and community members, and the reception gives time to talk with them.
