About this event
TICKETS Oct 28-Nov 1 On a remote Scottish isle, siblings Isla and Sandy spend their days hunting seabirds and retelling the stories of their ancestors. They follow the strict rules inherited from their late father - protect the island, allow no incomer, survive - until one day, Daniel, an awkward and socially inept council official, arrives to evacuate them. Bringing with him the strange mainland ways of laws, paperwork, veganism and internet wizardry, he turns their world upside down. As long-held beliefs begin to crumble, each of them must confront the truth, embrace change, and dare to imagine a life beyond the island while fighting to preserve the heritage they have sworn to defend.
Who's playing
Louis Paxton directed. Domhnall Gleeson plays alongside Gayle Rankin, Grant O'Rourke, Emun Elliott and Michelle Gomez. Isla and Sandy are the siblings who hunt seabirds and keep their ancestors' stories alive. Daniel is the awkward council official who arrives to move them off the island. The film has a 95 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.
What to expect
The island rules inherited from the siblings' late father are to protect the island, allow no incomer and survive. Daniel breaks them by arriving with paperwork, veganism and what the film calls internet wizardry. The story is about old beliefs giving way and whether the heritage the siblings swore to defend can survive the change. The Boedecker is a small arthouse room, and concessions open before screenings, with beer and wine and popcorn.
Why go
The Boedecker is Boulder's only year-round arthouse cinema, with about 70 seats. A film like this, small and international, rarely plays at the multiplexes. It suits anyone who likes a character-driven story set in a place far from the mainland.
