About this event

TICKETS Oct 28-Nov 1 On a remote Scottish isle, siblings Isla and Sandy spend their days hunting seabirds and retelling the stories of their ancestors. They follow the strict rules inherited from their late father - protect the island, allow no incomer, survive - until one day, Daniel, an awkward and socially inept council official, arrives to evacuate them. Bringing with him the strange mainland ways of laws, paperwork, veganism and internet wizardry, he turns their world upside down. As long-held beliefs begin to crumble, each of them must confront the truth, embrace change, and dare to imagine a life beyond the island while fighting to preserve the heritage they have sworn to defend.

Who's playing

Louis Paxton directs, and Domhnall Gleeson stars as Daniel, the awkward council official. Gayle Rankin and Grant O'Rourke play the siblings Isla and Sandy. Emun Elliott and Michelle Gomez are also in the cast. The film has a 95 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating.

What to expect

Isla and Sandy hunt seabirds and keep to their late father's rules: protect the island, allow no incomer, survive. Daniel arrives with paperwork, veganism and internet know-how, and their beliefs begin to give way. The film plays as a clash between old island heritage and mainland ways, and it follows each character as they decide whether to change.

Why go

The Boedecker is Boulder's only year-round arthouse cinema, with about 70 seats, so a film like this gets a proper screening in a close room. Concessions include popcorn and alcohol. It suits anyone who likes a quirky international story with a good cast.
