About this event
TICKETS Oct 28-Nov 1 On a remote Scottish isle, siblings Isla and Sandy spend their days hunting seabirds and retelling the stories of their ancestors. They follow the strict rules inherited from their late father - protect the island, allow no incomer, survive - until one day, Daniel, an awkward and socially inept council official, arrives to evacuate them. Bringing with him the strange mainland ways of laws, paperwork, veganism and internet wizardry, he turns their world upside down. As long-held beliefs begin to crumble, each of them must confront the truth, embrace change, and dare to imagine a life beyond the island while fighting to preserve the heritage they have sworn to defend.
Who's playing
Louis Paxton wrote and directed the film. Domhnall Gleeson plays Daniel, the awkward council worker. Gayle Rankin and Grant O'Rourke play the siblings Isla and Sandy, with Michelle Gomez and Emun Elliott also in the cast. It premiered at Sundance and opened the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
What to expect
Isla and Sandy hunt seabirds and keep to their late father's rules: protect the island, allow no incomer, survive. Daniel arrives with laws, paperwork, veganism and internet talk, and their beliefs start to give way. The Boedecker is a small room, and concessions, including beer and wine, are sold at the screenings.
Why go
The Boedecker is Boulder's only year-round arthouse cinema, and it shows films the big multiplexes skip. A story about heritage and change on a far-off island suits a room this size. The film also has a 95 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.
