Melvin Seals & JGB bring the music of the Jerry Garcia Band to Boulder Theater for a two-night run, with Liquid JPEG on the bill. Seals played Hammond B-3 organ in Garcia's band for 15 years and has led JGB since 1995. The 1936 Art Deco theater downtown is a good fit for a soulful jam night.
Who's playing
Melvin Seals joined the Jerry Garcia Band in 1980 and stayed until Garcia's passing in 1995. He has led Melvin Seals & JGB ever since. The lineup includes John Kadlecik on lead guitar and vocals, John-Paul McLean on bass, Pete Lavezzoli on drums, and Lady Chi and Mary-eL on backing vocals. Liquid JPEG is billed alongside them.
What to expect
The sound is built on gospel, blues and R&B roots, with Seals's Hammond B-3 out front. The band stretches and reshapes the songs instead of playing them as a straight tribute, so expect long, loose, groove-heavy playing. KGNU, Odell Brewing and 14er Boulder present the shows.
Why go
Seals is one of the few people still touring who played this music with Garcia himself. Boulder Theater suits it, with its Art Deco murals, a balcony bar and a capacity of around 1,000. Two nights also give you a choice of when to go.
