Melvin Seals & JGB bring the music of the Jerry Garcia Band to Boulder Theater for two nights over Halloween weekend, with Liquid JPEG on the bill. Seals played Hammond B-3 organ in Garcia's band for 15 years and has led JGB since. The show is presented by 88.5 KGNU, Odell Brewing and 14er Boulder.
Who's playing
Melvin Seals joined the Jerry Garcia Band in 1980 and stayed until Garcia's death in 1995. He then formed Melvin Seals & JGB and has kept touring. His playing draws on gospel, blues and R&B. He treats the songs as living music to stretch and reshape, not as a tribute act. Liquid JPEG is the featured addition to the billing.
What to expect
A jam-band show built on soulful, groove-heavy arrangements, with long organ-led improvisation and room for songs to wander. The run is two nights, and both fall on Halloween weekend. The Boulder Theater is a downtown art deco hall, with a historic marquee, painted murals and a ceiling fresco, and it holds about a thousand people.
Why go
Seals is a direct link to the Garcia band's sound, and he is still playing it on the road decades later. Boulder Theater suits that music well, since the room is old, ornate and close to the stage. With two nights, you can choose the one that fits your plans.
