Who's playing
Each CU ensemble gets its own set. Festival Chorus and University Choir are led by Elizabeth Swanson, Chamber Singers by Coreen Duffy, and Treble Chorus by graduate conductor Emily Peterson. Vanguard High School Choir and Chamber Choir, directed by Nikki Smith, are the guests. The Vanguard choirs have won top-choir honors at the Best of the West Music Invitational in Grand Junction.
What to expect
The program moves between centuries and styles. Palestrina, di Lasso, Mozart and Poulenc sit alongside Moses Hogan's spiritual arrangements, Copland's "At the River" and Carly Simon's "Let the River Run." Some pieces add violin, cello, accordion or percussion. The groups close by singing together, with Dolly Parton's "Light of a Clear Blue Morning" and the CU Fight Song. The program is listed at about two hours with no intermission.
Why go
You hear a university's whole choral program in one evening, along with local high school singers. Macky is a 1920s hall with a big pipe organ, renovated in the 1980s for concerts, and it is a fine place to hear voices. It is a free night of choral music in Boulder, and a live stream is also offered.
