About this event
Join us for a special event with Thomas Kurtz featuring a 30-minute recital followed by a 50-minute studio master class. Kurtz opens with Jean-Denis Michat’s electrifying "Shams," a sun-drenched work blending Western art music with Arabic modal traditions, followed by Ingrid Stölzel’s luminous "With Eyes Open," an expressive reflection on perspective and clarity. Immediately after the performance, Kurtz will lead a master class with members of the saxophone studio. For complete information visit cupresents.org
Who's playing
Thomas Kurtz is the guest artist on saxophone. Suyeon Kim, his pianist, is a teaching professor of collaborative piano at CU Boulder and has been on the faculty since 2013. She holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and the University of Texas at Austin. She has worked with instrumentalists and singers at festivals and competitions across the country.
What to expect
The evening starts with a 30-minute recital. Kurtz opens with Jean-Denis Michat's "Shams," which blends Western art music with Arabic modal traditions. Next is Ingrid Stölzel's "With Eyes Open," a reflection on perspective and clarity. A 50-minute studio master class follows, with Kurtz coaching members of the CU saxophone studio. Chamber Hall is a small room that seats 113, so you hear the players up close.
Why go
Most recitals show only the finished performance. This one adds the master class, where you hear a working saxophonist give students direct feedback. The program is short and uses newer repertoire for saxophone and piano. It suits students, players and curious listeners around Boulder.
