About this event
This is a bag-free event. In this keynote, Christopher Marmolejo will discuss divination as a choral, sonic medium in which the diviner is in correspondence with image, text, ancestor, element, time, the unseen and the uncertain. Marmolejo will explore decolonial divination, or a “red read,” that emphasizes speculative relations as a way of knowing, a way of understanding our relationship to the world and a methodology in which the diviner becomes a DJ, enacting critical intervention to let the margins talk back. Marmolejo continues Educating the Whole Human, a University Libraries series featuring accomplished scholars whose acclaimed work, shaped by lived experience, expands how knowledge is created and understood.
Who's playing
Christopher Marmolejo is a writer, scholar, educator and diviner. Their work looks at decolonization, indigeneity, queerness and consciousness through divination. They wrote Red Tarot: A Decolonial Guide to Divinatory Literacy, which treats tarot as a form of critical literacy. Their teaching draws on critical and feminist pedagogy alongside tarot and astrology.
What to expect
This is a keynote lecture, not a reading or workshop. Marmolejo will describe divination as a choral, sonic medium, with the diviner in correspondence with image, text, ancestor, element and time. They will also explain decolonial divination, or a "red read," in which the diviner acts like a DJ and lets the margins talk back. It is held in a university lecture hall, and it is a bag-free event.
Why go
Educating the Whole Human brings scholars whose work is shaped by lived experience and who change how knowledge is made. This talk is a chance to hear that approach applied to tarot and divination, which are rarely discussed on a university stage. It suits students, faculty and community members curious about ways of knowing beyond conventional academic lines.
