*Registration is Required Reading Buddies program helps children build positive relationships with reading and writing. Children in grades 1-3 are matched with an adult volunteer or University of Colorado student for 10-12 sessions. Each week, Reading Buddies pairs spend 90 minutes playing games, reading books, and writing their own story, while having fun and building confidence. Interested in participating? Please fill out this online registration.
Who's playing
Each child, called a Little Buddy, is matched with a Big Buddy. Big Buddies are adult volunteers or University of Colorado students. The pairs are for children roughly in the early elementary grades. The program is run by BoulderReads staff, who coordinate the volunteers and the matches.
What to expect
Each session runs 90 minutes. The pair plays literacy games, reads books and works on an original story. Over a semester the story is written and illustrated, then shared with families at a closing celebration. The program runs for a set number of weeks in the fall, spring and summer, and registration is part of joining.
Why go
The aim is to build a child's confidence and a lasting liking for reading, through steady one-on-one attention instead of drills. The NoBo Library opened in 2024 as a neighborhood hub. It has a children's room, a makerspace and a playground, and BoulderReads is based there.
