About this event

Merritt R. Turetsky will speak about and sign her new book, Bogland: The Secret World That Defies Death and Protects Life, on Thursday, October 29th at 6:30pm, at Boulder Bookstore. She will be in conversation with Hillary Rosner for this special event. Tickets for this event are $5 (plus a small processing fee) and are available on Eventbrite. About the Book: Not quite land and not quite water, boglands have long been dismissed as wastelands - too sodden to farm, too perilous to cross, too unruly to be considered beautiful. Come closer, however, and a strange truth emerges: These wild, eerie landscapes stretch our minds, hold the history of humanity, and will shape the future of our planet. In Bogland, acclaimed ecologist Merritt R. Turetsky invites readers to discover the elusive magic and surprising power of these misunderstood places, where the boundaries blur between life and death, past and present, refuge and peril. The debut of an extraordinary nature writer, Bogland is an ode and a call to action: to defend bogs’ strangeness and stillness from rising destruction, to value them precisely for their refusal to conform, and to learn from them new ways to adapt, endure, and belong on our changing planet - before it’s too late. IMPORTANT TICKETING AND EVENT INFORMATION Tickets are $5 (plus a small processing fee). A coupon good for $5 off a copy of Bogland, or a purchase on the day of the event is included with your ticket. You will receive this coupon at the event. Please note: our events are held on the second floor. To request a reasonable accommodation or discuss your needs, contact events@boulderbookstore.com

Who's playing

Turetsky is a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado Boulder. She has spent decades researching bogs and other peatlands. Bogland is her first creative nonfiction book, published by W. W. Norton. Hillary Rosner, a journalist formerly with CU's Center for Environmental Journalism, leads the conversation.

What to expect

A talk, a conversation with Rosner, and a book signing, held in the bookstore's second-floor event space. The book argues that bogs hold the history of humanity, store a large share of the planet's soil carbon, and are under growing threat. Expect stories from Turetsky's fieldwork as well as the science.

Why go

Bogs are an unusual subject for a Boulder evening, and the author lives and works here. The book's launch event is hosted by the Pearl Street Mall bookshop, so it is a chance to hear her explain why these places matter and get a signed copy.
